Wikimedia launches Wikipedia for Schools DVD for offline uses

October 28, 2008

Wikipedia

Wikipedia is the free encyclopedia that everyone loves to use. Perhaps, the only complaint is that Wikipedia is sometimes inaccurate.

When not connected to the internet, using Wikipedia wasn’t possible. Until now.

The Wikimedia Foundation (which is behind Wikipedia) has released an offline Wikipedia for Schools which has 5500 articles on selected topics and can be burned to a DVD for offline reading.

The Wikipedia for Schools DVD is targeted at school children in the age group of 8-18, and has only content suitable for them. Wikimedia states that all unsuitable content (mainly adult/adult-related content) has been removed by SOS volunteers.

Wikipedia for Schools is about 3GB in size and is available on BitTorrent.

Chandrayaan1 – India’s maiden moon mission

October 21, 2008

Chandrayaan1 – Its very memorial and pride moment for people of India

India’s first moon craft mission scripted and directed by ISRO is a highly advanced operation in terms of its technologies and scientific devices, researched and built indigenously. Sometime between October 19 and November 8, 2008, India is all set to take its first steps beyond the geo-stationary Orbit, when Chandrayaan-1 transits to the moon.

After being cleared by the Government of India five years ago, and after repeated delays, Chandrayaan-1 is finally ready for launch on October 22, 2008. If the weather conditions are not favorable, the Chandrayaan-1 late October 2008 launch will be postponed to November or December 2008 when the orbital plane of the moon will again be aligned for a fuel efficient transfer.

Chandrayaan-1 was built by the Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO) along with partners such as HAL and carries 11 payloads, five from India and six from International agencies. This includes three from the European Space Agency (ESA) , one from the Bulgarian Aerospace Agency (BSA), and two from NASA.

Sun will rise continuously for 36 hrs(1.5 days)

October 12, 2008

Sun will rise continuously for 36 hrs(1.5 days).

Yaaaa….wooh… what exciting news!!!

Today, when I was working at my desk, I received a mail from my colleague saying,

Coming October 17, 2008 the sun will rise continuously for 36 hrs (1.5 days). During this time the American countries will be dark for 1.5 days.

It will convert 3 days into 2 big days. It will happen once in 2400 yrs.
We’re very lucky to see this. Forward it to all friends.”

What the hell are you talking about?? Is it possible?? How?? (This was my first reaction to the mail)

As much as we know of the science of earth’s rotation, this does not seem possible. For it to happen the earth should stop rotating and be stuck for sometime at one place or else it should rotate at a slower pace. However, if this is true, I would like to know the scientific explanation behind this. I even tried to find some links of Google on this but could not…and then if the US is supposed to have 1.5 nights at a stretch, it means we in India will have 1.5 days at a stretch! I don’t think this is true or possible.

Well guys, i feel that we should wait n watch what will happen on October 17, 2008. If the information will be true then we must honor the person who has spread this information by giving him/her a good position at NASA. If it is not then start searching for that person….. P

Good bye!! See you guys on October 17, 2008

Today is  October 18 – 2008

Anything happend in SUN or EARTH?
Sure, it is spam message and somebody want to digg the people.
I think this message originated in DC Universe. People are getting creative day by day.

” The Joy That Never Sees The Eclipse

************ ********* ********* *

The joy that never sees the eclipse,
The hope which never meets the despair,
I pray!This crescent of
Eid may bring to you.

The mind that fastens human bonds,
The heart which bleeds for the love of man,
I pray! This crescent of Eid may bring to you.

The soul that buries all its ills,
The world which aspires for the lasting peace,
I pray! This crescent of Eid may bring to you.

The passion that even the angels envy,
The humility which placates the Divine Wrath,
I pray ! This crescent of Eid may bring to you.

US-India deal – Nuclear suppliers approved

September 6, 2008

Vienna: Forty-five nuclear supplier states today approved a US proposal to drop a ban on trade with India, advancing a US-Indian atomic energy deal, diplomats in the closed meeting told Reuters.

The decision followed a tense debate over conditions for the move demanded by Nuclear Suppliers Group members to minimise any damage to the Non-Proliferation Treaty, which India has not joined. Details were not immediately known.

One hurdle remained before the US-India deal could take force — ratification by the US Congress. It must act before adjourning in late September for elections or the deal could be left to an uncertain fate under a new US administration.

Indian Hacked UK’s Best Western Chain.

August 26, 2008

Outsourcing comes with a lot of risks, information security  being one of the most serious risk of all.  My clients have shown concerns regarding security for even something as simple as a static business website.

So the news that a hacker from India hacked into one of the top hotel chain computer systems is serious and comes as a rude wake up call for all of us in the business world.

The hacking of UK’s Best Western Hotel Group’s online booking system by an hacker from India is certainly going to heighten the awareness regarding hacking.
